The Women in Medicine Legacy Foundation’s (WIMLF) mission is to preserve and promote the history of women in medicine and the medical sciences. American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) aims to advance women in medicine, advocate for equity, and ensure excellence in health care.
Together we are working to preserve and promote the history of women in medicine and the medical sciences, and this fall we are partnering on a fall lectureship series that will collectively celebrate and connect all to the legacy that empowers the future of women in medicine.

Biographies:
Lucille (Lucy) Lester, MD, obtained an MD degree from the University of Chicago of Pritzker School of Medicine in 1972, one of six women in a class of 80. She completed pediatric residency and fellowship training at that institution, served two years as a clinical associate at the NIH- Pediatric Metabolism Branch, and then spent most of the next 30 years as a faculty member of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago. Promoted to Professor, she served as Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center and as Section Chief of Pediatric Pulmonary division. She directed clinical studies of new therapies for children and adults with cystic fibrosis and asthma, and collaborated on NIH funded studies of the genetics of asthma. She has authored numerous publications and supervised the training of medical students and residents throughout her career; she retired in 2013. She now pursues her interests in the history of medicine and women’s studies.
Danielle Ofri MD, PhD, FACP, is one of the foremost voices in the medical world today. She’s a primary care internist at Bellevue Hospital at Bellevue Hospital and clinical professor of medicine at NYU, as well as founder/editor-in-chief of Bellevue Literary Review, and her writing appears in The New Yorker, the New York Times, as well as in The Lancet, and NEJM. She’s given several TED talks and performed at The Moth. Theresa Rohr-Kirchgraber, MD, FACP, is President of the American Medical Women’s Association and Professor of Medicine at the Augusta University/University of Georgia. She is past Executive Director of the Indiana University National Center of Excellence in Women's Health. Over the course of her career, Dr. Rohr-Kirchgraber has led efforts to improve the health of women through outreach programs, statewide collaborations, and policy influence. She has held numerous leadership positions within AMWA and the American Medical Association. An inaugural Fellow of AMWA, Dr. Rohr-Kirchgraber has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
Connie Newman, MD, MACP, FAHA, FAMWA, is an endocrinologist and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at New York University Grossman School of Medicine, and a graduate of Wellesley College and Weill Cornell Medical College. She is a past president and fellow of the American Medical Women’s Association, Master of the American College of Physicians, Fellow of the American Heart Association, and the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Newman is an appointed member of the FDA Endocrine and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee and co-editor of a new medical textbook, “How Sex and Gender Impact Clinical Practice: An Evidence Based Approach to Patient Care.”
